Ease Stitching & Shaping

Chang Ya-Wei x Chung Chi-Yi x Tsai Hao Tien
Shine Bright Like Water x Ba Ding Dong Kuang x Ease Stitching & Shaping

In this programme series, choreographer and astrologer Chang Ya-Wei, traditional musician Chung Chi-Yi, and fashion designer Tsai Hao Tien converge through three evolving bodily practices. Their actions unfold across the site as rituals of intention, procession, and mending, weaving together gestures of healing that slowly accumulate into a strange, exuberant manifesto for our time.

In tailoring, ease stitching and shaping are techniques used to create volume and contour, allowing flat pieces of fabric to be molded to the curves of the body through stitching and pressing.

I still remember my teenage years, when I first became fascinated by fashion. I was always eager to experiment with unconventional looks. My increasingly feminine style challenged the conservative values of my family and contradicted society's expectations of how a person assigned male at birth should present themselves. Whenever I wanted to dress differently, I would pack a large bag with clothes and accessories, change at a classmate's house, and only then head out.

After leaving home for university and later entering the workforce, clothing became more than a means of self-expression—it became a process of self-discovery. It allowed me to negotiate my relationship with both myself and the different communities I moved through. By experimenting with styles, silhouettes, and materials, I have continually tested boundaries, reshaped my appearance, and embraced an identity that continues to evolve.

At the former Air Force Command Headquarters—a site that once embodied unquestionable state authority—I established a temporary tailoring studio within its austere, masculine architecture. Before a series of dress forms, I engaged in a ritual of self-dialogue through the acts of measuring, observing, stitching, mending, pressing, and finishing. Tailoring became both a practical craft and a performative gesture: a way of reshaping not only fabric, but also memory, identity, and the body itself.
