Masked kay^ing: A Journey Back to the Self

The Everyday Life of Masked Kay^ing is an interdisciplinary performance blending movement, culinary arts, and narrative. Centering on ""Kay^ing""—meaning ""young woman"" in Amis, homophonous with the Mandarin word for ""sensory resonance""—the piece follows an Amis woman, no longer in her youth yet remaining a Kay^ing at heart, on a journey intertwined with the breadfruit (facidol).

Through physical performance, ancestral memory, and cooking, the work explores how we navigate social labels and cultural symbols. Audiences are invited to engage in dance exchange and share a bowl of soup, transforming passive watching into a collective sensory experience. Set within domestic kitchens and everyday spaces, the performance reconnects body, land, and self through culinary and physical actions, seeking an authentic connection free from labels.

Performer: Panay Pan

Pan Panay is an Amis performing artist from the Cipawkan Tribe in Hualien. With over eighteen years of artistic practice, her work centers on the body, weaving together sound, language, and spatial experience to create interdisciplinary performances from the perspective of Indigenous women. Her creations bring ancestral memory into dialogue with contemporary narratives, revealing the many dimensions of Indigenous identity and lived experience.
As an artist, Pan Panay continually transforms herself, embracing the many facets of life through performance. In 2025, her work remakat kita (From Here to There) received the Grand Prize in the Performing Arts category at the Pulima Arts Awards. Her earlier work Calay (Threads), presented at the Pulima Performing Arts of Young Generation in 2022, was nominated for the Taishin Arts Award.
